by Eric Chast
June 11, 2008
The ACHA D3 division has mandated several new rules regarding equipment.
For new players planing on trying out for ASU next season, this means several things. Players need to have black gloves and helmets for next season. If you have any questions regarding the new rules please contact the team.
The team will be taking care of matching shells, another of the changes.
For goaltenders, restrictions on the size of equipment are now in effect.
New equipment is expensive no matter what position you are playing, and we are sorry if this causes any problems. You can find the same information in this article under our recruits page.

Farewell Seniors
by Eric Chast
April 27, 2008
BOONE – It is that bitter-sweet time of the year where graduating seniors say goodbye to the school they have known for years to take on the real world. For the Appalachian State hockey team, that means saying goodbye to seniors Austin Pantaleo and Nick Livy.
Pantaleo has played two seasons with the team wearing the number eight sweater. He is a sniper and an incredible puck handler who came to ASU from Florida.
Livy has played all four years of his college career wearing the number 16 sweater. Livy graduates after another semester. On the ice he is a power forward capable of winning the one on one battles along the boards. Livy came to ASU from Kentucky.
The team wants to thanks both of these men for their contributions to the team both on and off the ice and wish them luck in the future. While the team looks for the next freshmen to fill their shoes, the alumni have two fine additions to their squad.
Second Annual Alumni game a great success
by Eric Chast
April 20, 2008
RALEIGH -- At the Factory Ice House in Wake Forest, NC, App State Ice Hockey celebrated its ten years of existence with the second annual Alumni Game. The showing by the alumni squad in numbers and performance is proof that family survives graduation.
"great game, a lot different from last year talent wise on the alumni side," said '07 graduate John Hauser. Hauser scored the final goal for the alum on a pass from '05 graduate and former captain Bobby Hathaway.
At first it looked like it was going to be a repeat blow out of last year's game when the current team took a 3-0 lead in the first. Momentum was quickly halted when Bobby Hathaway was able to find a lose rebound on the goal line with a minute left in the third. That ended a near flawless performance by his younger brother, freshman goaltender Tyler Hathaway, who played the first period for the current team.
"I stopped him more than he scored on me," said the younger Hathaway about the goal.
The alumni would complete the come back in the second period, scoring two in the first half of the period. The game-tying goal at the time was scored by former captain Alex Hogan, who retired from the team last year after four seasons.
Shaking off a lack luster performance by the current team was junior alternate captain Ryan Hauser. The younger Hauser scored by catching a clearing shot in the slot and slapping it. Hauser's goal put the current team up 4-3 going into the third.
After a dramatic speech by Brian Dolan, who played for the team in 2003, the alumni came out fast. James Birkett tied the game at 4 back handing a rebound into the net. Birkett retired last season after four seasons with the team.
That was the closest the alumni came to pulling off the upset. Several goals by the current squad put the game away later in the third. A friendly fight between '06 graduate and former captain Mike Beneteau and senior Nick Livy received loud applause from the crowd.
The team wants to thank Bobby Hathaway for organizing the event, the Boosters who have donated so much time and money into the team, and our alumni and families that came to enjoy the game and pizza afterwards.
Repeating the common conclusion to the weekend's events is next year's team president, freshman Casey Krasen, "It was a great weekend that brought a lot of great people together. The game was excellent and helped strengthen the bond between current players and the alumni"
