Mountaineers beat Wolfpack, head
to Charlotte
By Eric Chast
The Mountaineers close out the semester
this weekend with games against the UNC Charlotte 49ers.
The Mountaineers split the series last
year, winning the first game 7-5. The 49ers co-hosted the Charlotte Shootout
earlier this season, but did not end up playing Appalachian.
App State come into the weekend off two
wins over the NCSU Wolfpack. The wins put the Mountaineers’ overall d3 record
to 7-3.
Both games were close going into the
third. ASU won the first game 7-5, lead by the scoring of Captain Sal Blair and
President Casey Krasen.
The Mountaineers would score 7 goals again
the next night but victory would not come as easy. The Mountaineers thought
they had the game won when they scored with 45 seconds left to make the game
6-5, but with 15 seconds left and the goalie pulled, NCSU tied the game.
Overtime was not enough to decide the
match, but featured great saves by goaltender Tommy Fitts and big hits from
both sides. After NCSU scored on the first shot of the shootout, ASU would
score three in a row to win the game 7-6.
Appalachian State is now 3-1 in the BRHC
Carolina division. The team could go as high as 5-1 this weekend, a nice
thought heading into exams.
ASU resumes conference schedule
by Eric Chast
RALEIGH –
The Mountaineers go to Raleigh this weekend to face the Wolfpack in two games.
The games, Friday and Saturday at
9:30p.m. in the Reczone, are the first BRHC conference games for the
Mountaineers in over a month, when they played The Citadel.
The two teams have played this
season, with ASU winning 8-6 in the first round of the Charlotte Shootout.
Since NCSU (DIII) has become a team, ASU has gone undefeated, going 3-0 in that
time.
Coming into the weekend, the
Mountaineers are 6-5 overall and 5-3 in DIII play, including the Charlotte
Shootout. Their losses include #2 Georgia Tech and Old Dominion, who played at
nationals last year.
According to the NCSU Website, they
come into the weekend 1-8, including a 26-1 win over Lynchburg College. Their
last game, on November 8th
, NCSU played a very well respected UNCW team
close, to a 4-3 loss.
The Mountaineers will have another
bye week over the Thanksgiving break before finishing the first semester in
Charlotte against UNCC, December 5th
and 6th
.
